LAS VEGAS BABY!!!

Ik ging vrijdag dus naar het MGM Grand. Aldaar aangekomen ging het inchecken weer heel smooth en ik zat binnen no-time op m'n kamertje, die eigenlijk nog best tegenviel. TV met gaar beeld, gare kraan, kleiner dan The Orleans, etc. Ik had wel een mooi uitzicht op Mandalay Bay, Excalibur en Luxor.

De kamer was wel redelijk classy though. Ik had ook flink wat bonussen bij m'n reservering: 35 dollar entertainment/dining credit en 2 gratis cocktails bij de Rouge bar. Een cocktail kost al gauw 12 dollar. Ik betaalde 97 dollar inclusief voor deze deal, dus in feite betaal ik nog maar iets van 40 dollar voor de kamer.

Met m'n 35 dollar ging ik naar fancy restaurant "Shibuya", een Japans restaurant. Normaal zou ik hier nooit naartoe gegaan zijn; ik haat overpayen voor Japans voedsel dat niet eens even lekker is als in Japan. Dit restaurant was vrij professioneel though, ik vond de inktvis echt supergoed smaken.
Ik had vooraf ook wat "edamame" genomen, als appetizertje. Ik verwachtte een klein bakje ofzo, komen ze opeens met iets van een kilo edamame aanzetten, LOL. Dat is echt onmogelijk weg te werken. De Japanse chefs waren niet echt spraakzaam, wat ik wel een beetje jammer vond. Ze waren wel zeer goed bezig qua het bereiden van eten.

Na het eten ging ik linea recta door naar de pokerroom en nam plaats aan een 200 NL tafel. Uiteindelijk 85 euro gewonnen, mede dankzij een grote pot waarin ik de river bluffbette met een gemiste nutflushdraw.

Hierna heb ik nog even een cocktail gedronken bij Rouge en een beetje video-blackjack gespeeld. Uiteindelijk break even uitgecashed.

Vrijdagmorgen was het tijd om weer naar downtown te gaan. Vrijdagnacht en Zaterdagnacht zijn de duurste hotelnachten, de prijs kan oplopen tot 3 of 4x de normale prijs. Vandaar dat ik in een hostel van 22 dollar per nacht heb gezeten.

Downtown is echt zo anders dan de Strip. Het freemont experience gebied is wel ok, maar als je freemont street afloopt richting mijn hostel verandert het straatbeeld wel flink. Overal lopen zwervers, verslaafden, gangsternegerts... Ik voelde me niet echt optimaal toen ik daar rondliep met m'n kekke kleertjes en travelcase.

Toen ik eenmaal bij m'n hostel aangekomen was durfde ik ook bijna niet meer naar buiten. Deze angst was redelijk snel overwonnen echter, alles went. Gewoon door blijven lopen en je mp3 speler aanzetten (de mijne was stuk natuurlijk helaas, ik deed hem wel in om me wat minder aanspreekbaar te maken).

Ik ga nu even stoppen met m'n verhaal omdat mij net gemeld word dat ik hier over 10 minuten weggekicked word. Even snel wat foto's posten:






Yep, ik ben gisteren met een limo naar nachtclub "Body English" in het Hard Rock Casino geweest :) Erg vette shit. Morgen zal ik ff een vervolg schrijven en wat meer foto's posten.

Heading for the MGM Grand

I just checked out at The Orleans, heading for the MGM Grand now. I'm also going to pick up my mobile phone.

After posting yesterday I went to my room and got me some room-service. My pizza arrived in under 20 minutes, pretty fast. Not bad for 15 dollars I guess.

While I was eating I was watching this really crappy American tv show.

After I finished my pizza I almost immediately fell asleep at 9 pm. This is a really bad jetlag, worst yet.
I woke up again in the middle of the night but managed to get to sleep again until 8:30.

I might not post for a few days, I'm not sure if I have access to the internet at the hostel.
Probably switching back to writing in Dutch also...Sorry Yukiko.

Taking a trip downtown

Today I went to downtown Las Vegas to see what it's like. I booked a hostel there for the weekend. It surely differs a lot from the strip.

Let's continue yesterday's story first. After making my post I went straight to the dinner buffet and oh boy, what a feast it was. It was priced at around 15 dollars, but it sure worth it. This is the only time I envy all those fat Americans for being able to eat so goddamn much.

The buffet had it all: steaks, ribs, shrimp, chicken... Just too much to sum up here. I
grabbed some red meat and a few cowribs. I've never seen 'em so big! I didn't want to over-eat though, so I only took some ice cream for dessert after that.

After this I went straight for the poker room. It was very crowded, but luckily I didn't have to wait for a seat. I bought in for 200 dollars and played for about 4 hours, netting a 18 dollar profit. Every win is a win though, and I was pretty pleased with my play. I even made a very good bluff with 2 random cards and showed it . All in all I think The Orleans has a pretty good poker room, only downside is that there are a lot of locals playing. It's pretty nice for grinding, but just not that juicy.

Playing poker in Vegas is superb though. The max rake on 200 NL is usually about 4 dollars, which is very nice if you compare it to the max 20 euro in the Netherlands. A second forte are the free drinks. A cocktail waitress will come over regularly and ask you if you want something to drink. It's normal to tip here a dollar though, but I'll gladly give a dollar for a beer anyday. Lastly, the casino "comps" you for every hour you play. At the Orleans you get 1,25 dollar an hour, so I received 5 dollars yesterday. That's almost a free breakfast buffet!

I really enjoyed myself at the game, all the players were really nice. It felt like a homegame. A lady was even allowed to get her cards out of the much when she accidentily tipped them over when she showed them. I think I drank about 4 corona's or so, so sleeping was not a problem. I woke up at 7 AM again though :S

After breakfast I took the free shuttle to Bill's Gambling Hall on the Strip. Then I walked to the Planet Hollywood Casino to play the free daily slot tournament (didn't win anything) and took a free spin on the Slot Machine at the entrance. Everytime you do this you get a used deck of Planet Hollywood cards, I've got three of em now :) Gonna try to get as many as I can just for kicks :)

As I left the Casino the Deuce stopped right in front of my nose, so I decided to ride it. I rode it all the way to downtown, which is a 5 mile drive. I really like the atmosphere of the old downtown casino's like Binions and the Golden Nugget. I decided to play some 200 NL at the Nugget, and booked a nice win: 250 dollars. I won a very big pot with aces. The hand went something like this:

I picked up aces in early position, and raised to 12 dollars. Three people called my raise. The flop was all low cards, 47x rainbow. I checked, and someone in middle position bet 20 dollars. One guy folded to this and the other one called. I didn't like this spot naturally, but I felt it would be pretty bad if I folded. I had allready decided to checkraise to a substantial amount when I saw the flop. I made is 70 dollars to go. Both guys called me, this put the 2nd guy allin. The first guy had about 40-50 dollars left, so he was pretty much committed. Turn was an ace, giving me the stonecold nuts. I put the 1st guy allin and he called ofcourse. My opponent both mucked at showdown.

I didn't learn what the first guy's hand was, but I learned that the shortstack had 47, so I was pretty lucky when the ace came off.

When I went to the McDonalds after this, the shortstacker from before was there too and recognized me.
He bought a happy meal because he didn't have anymore money. I sat down at his table and talked a bit. It seemed his life was pretty tough. He's not the only one in downtown who has is rough, there are a lot of homeless and poor people walking the streets there. He just wanted to get some money out of me so he tried to convince me of his struggle with life. In the end I only gave him a dollar in quarters because I only had 10 dollars bills and up. I'm very nitty, I'm not going to just give away 10 dollars. It doesn't even help that much most of the times anyway.

I left for the Strip again and stopped at Circus Circus. I must say it's rather a fun casino :) They have a pretty good arcade and a free circus act every 30 minutes. A part of one of my favourite movies, "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", was filmed here. That made it very entertaining to walk around. The moving bar from the movie was gone though; it has been replaced by slot machines.

For so far the good news. A sad thing happened today. My ipod finally broke :( This means I can no longer listen to my music. Music is like medicine to me; I really need it to wind down sometimes. Buying a new ipod won't cure anything as I can't put any music on it here.

Concluding:

I'm up about 180 dollars gambling.
I'm down an ipod.


I think I'm gonna take it easy tonight. I'm going to watch a movie called "21" starring Kevin Spacey at the cinema in my hotel, and afterwards I might grind 200 NL a little to get those free beers :)

Tomorrow I'm moving to the MGM Grand for one night. I'd rather stay here but I was too lazy to cancel my booking at the MGM. It's a good reason to play some poker there though, it should be a lot softer.

Viva Las Vegas, I'm really starting to get used to being here :)

Donkament action

I will post in English from now on to make the weblog available to more persons, including my girlfriend. I was so tired yesterday that I fell asleep at 8:00 pm in the evening, and I woke up again at around 5:00 am. This is what we call a bad case of jet lag :(

After lingering for 2 more hours and watching some TV I decided to head for the buffet.
The buffet costs a whopping 6,4 dollars. Thats like 4 euro's or whatever. The buffet has all kinds of food including typical American breakfast products like sausages, pancakes and hamburgers, but also has pie, Mexican food, "Japanese" food and fruit. You won't find a lot of people getting an apple though.

After this I decided to head for the Planet Hollywood Casino and play a 60 dollar buy-in tournament, because the structure is probably one of the best in town (at least the best of the casino's I checked so far). U get a starting stack of 4000 points, with blinds starting at 25-50. From here on you get 50-100, 100-200, 200-400, 300-600, 500-1000, 1000-2000. These last 2 levels make it pretty much a push or fold game.

I was playing extremely well, I had most guys figured out and exploited every weakness. I also got aces that paid of rather well; I hit a set on the flop (all clover board) and pushed all-in on a blank turn. I got called by a guy that hit a pair on the turn and had a flush-draw. Luckily the river was another ace, giving me quads. I wish this would have happened in a cash game, I would have got a pretty nice high hand jackpot for it.

At the 5k level I pushed all-in on the small blind with JTos with 1 limper. Unfortunately the limper had AQ and made an easy call. I didn't put him on such a big hand :( I lost around 5k chips of my 8k here. The next hand I picked up KQos and pushed allin with 1 limper in front. Unfortunately for me the BB had AA. It's a shame because the BB had allready called with KJ, I would have had him dominated. O well, it can't be helped.

So I'm now down 85 dollars on gambling. No biggie. I'm prolly going to play some 200 NL tonight. The level of play seems very low on 1-2 NL, so I might win a bit. You never know though :)

By the way it's really extremely hot here, the sun is really hot. I'm glad I returned
kinda early today, before you know it you have a zonnesteek.

Now let's eat some meat at the dinner buffet :)

Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas

Uiteindelijk na anderhalf uur vertraging opgelopen te hebben vertrok het vliegtuig dan toch richting Las Vegas. Op het station nog snel ff een 600 ml(!) Dr. Pepper gekocht voor 1,69 dollar en 500 dollar gepind (320,96 euro, hendig dat internetbankieren. Niet echt een topkoers die ze hebben gehanteerd).

Afijn toen we eenmaal in de lucht zaten sloeg de vermoeidheid hard toe, waardoor de reis weer wat korter werd. Toen ik dacht dat we ongeveer gingen landen probeerde ik Vegas door mijn window-seat raam te spotten, maar toen duurde reis nog een uur, wat best tegenvalt op zo'n moment. De aankomst was uiteindelijk schitterend. Ik had mazzel want ik kon in vogelvlucht heel de strip zien, binnen een minuut raasden alle hotels aan me voorbij. Supermooi om te zien en opeens ook heel erg onwerkelijk. Ik dacht eerst dat ik een video zat te kijken ofzo :S

Na het landen kom je meteen rijen slot-machines tegen, die me verder uiteraard niet konden boeien. Het eerste dat ik deed was een whopper halen bij de Burger King en ik kon daarna vrij vlot m'n reiskoffer ophalen.

Ik had in Nederland al besloten dat ik mezelf zou verplaatsen met het publieke vervoerssysteem van Vegas, de bus. Het is niet echt "ballah" natuurlijk, maar voor mijn budget wel optimaal. Een maandkaart kost namelijk 40 dollar. Met die kaart kun je alle routes pakken, inclusief the Deuce.

Dat dit niet de meest glorieuze vervoersmethode was bleek al snel. Ik moest eerst vanaf het vliegveld naar een terminal om aldaar de maandkaart te kopen. Ik had grote moeite met het vinden van de bushalte. Dit bleek namelijk een soort stalen partytent te zijn (zoals je die in NL ziet, die witte). De mensen die hier aan het wachten staan leken ook niet bepaald op high-rollers. Op de South Strip Terminal werd ik ook niet echt vrolijker. Er waaide een gure wind doorheen en de politie-agent met het duidelijk zichtbare wapen liep hier niet voor niks rond. Uiteindelijk kwam ik wel gewoon heelhuids aan bij m'n hotel uiteraard.

Het inchecken ging soepel en voordat ik het wist zat ik in mijn kamertje van iets van 35 vierkante meter, erg nice! De kwaliteit van de kamer is echt super voor 37 dollar. Als laatste activiteit heb ik nog even het casino verkend en me aangemeld voor de players club (meteen een graties buffet-ticket ontvangen). Zin om te gokken had ik verder niet, al zag de pokerroom er erg relaxed uit.

Vanochtend werd ik al om 7:00 wakker na om 2:00 naar bed te zijn gegaan, niet echt optimaal dus. Qua energie zat het wel snor dus ik ben er op uit getrokken. Met de bus stond ik binnen 5 minuten voor het MGM Grand. Erg mooi casino en aardige pokerroom. Hun daily pokertournooi heeft wel een beetje een klotestructuur alleen, in het 3e level al antes lols :S Daarna ben ik naar het Planet Hollywood casino gelopen om te kijken of ze nog het tournooi met Michael Mizrachi "The Grinder" organiseerden. Hier ben ik niet echt achtergekomen en ik was eigenlijk te lam om het te vragen. Komt nog wel. De pokerroom hier is wel aardig, een beetje klein alleen. Zag er erg fishy uit wel (lees: veel slechte spelers) wat ik er van gezien heb. Ik heb wel nog even een 25 dollar "match" bonus gespeeld op roulette. Dit houdt in dat ik 25 dollar inleg en dat als ik win mn winst verdubbeld zou worden (komt neer op 50 dollar winnen of 25 dollar verliezen, +expected value). Je moest wel een "even money" bet maken (bij roulette: rood/zwart/even/odd/1st 18/2nd 18). Helaas viel rood weer eens niet, waardoor mijn eerste verlies een feit is.

Ik ben vandaag ook al even bij het pinball museum weest te kijken. Zag er leuk uit, al viel de staat van de kasten me toch nog wel tegen. Ik heb in ieder geval geen 1 kast gespeeld die echt perfect speelde.
Zodra je de strip afgaat kom je al wel gauw in contact met "bijzondere" Amerikanen. Het is ook niet voor niks dat de regels in de bus stipuleren dat mensen een shirt en schoenen aan moeten hebben :S Een groot deel van de Amerikanen zit ook goed op gewicht. Best knap dat ze met dit vreselijk warme weer nog de energie hebben de strip op en neer te lopen.

Hier laat ik het maar ff bij, want het business center van The Orleans gaat sluiten. Sorry voor het waarschijnlijk ietwat incoherente verhaal.

Het is hier in ieder geval erg tof, ik ben alweer totaal gewend :S

Aangekomen in Philadelphia

Zojuist ben ik geland in Philadelphia. De vlucht verliep erg soepel; er waren dus toch erg veel indianenverhalen over US Airways. De vlucht deed niet onder voor British Airways en Al Italia. Enige minpuntje is dat je 5 euro/dollar moet betalen voor alcoholische versnaperingen, maar daar was ik toch niet aan toe.

De douane viel me ook echt reuze mee. Ik ben gewoon heel correct behandeld en er waren geen problemen. Ik denk dat ik liever hier aankom dan in Japan (mede omdat ik de vorige keer wat probleempjes had daar, toen ik 1 dag nadat mn toeristenvisum afliep alweer op de deurmat stond).

Nu moet ik nog even iets van 4 uur wachten voordat m'n vlucht naar Vegas vertrekt... Ik zit nu achter een gratis internet-terminal dit te tikken, dus dat is alweer een verzetje. Ik ga maar eens een ATM zoeken aangezien ik 0 dollar bijheb.

Nog een paar daagjes...

Mijn vertrekdatum nadert met rasse schreden. Morgen moet ik nog werken en zaterdag kan ik de laatste voorbereidingen treffen. Er zijn weinig substantiele zaken die nog geregeld moeten worden, het belangrijkste wat ik moet doen is GEEN belangrijke dingen vergeten.

Ik zat vandaag even op de pokerinfo chat te lurken en raakte daar in de praat met iemand die 31 maart naar Vegas vertrekt. Tijdens dit soort gesprekken piekt de voorpret meestal wel. Hij meldde me ook dat hij en 6 vrienden wat telefoons over gingen nemen van PI'ers die op het moment in Vegas zijn.

Aangezien de kosten zeer gering zijn om mobiel bereikbaar te zijn in Vegas heb ik me maar aangesloten bij ze. Ik kan dus hopelijk op 1 van mijn eerste dagen een mobieltje oppikken. Ik vind dit erg tof; er is niks vreselijkers dan geen mobiel nummer bij de hand hebben als je een tof iemand ontmoet. Voor het thuisfront is het ook fijn, want die kunnen je altijd bereiken. Afijn ik denk dat iedereen sowieso wel inziet hoe fijn het is een mobiel te hebben :)

On another note: M'n vriendin is terug van haar vakantie in India. Ze is met een vriendin een klein weekje in het land van de heilige koe geweest. Ze heeft het geweldig leuk gehad, en heeft zelfs een huwelijksaanzoek van een Indische man gehad :) Dit heeft ze uiteraard afgeslagen, want ze kan zich natuurlijk geen beter vriendje wensen *kuch*.

Toen ze hem teleurstelde met het nieuws dat ze een Nederlands vriendje heeft is hij naar verluid in tranen uitgebarsten.

Ze heeft enkele leuke foto's gestuurd, waarvan ik jullie de volgende niet wil onthouden. Dit is tevens mijn nieuwe desktop background op m'n werk :)
